Easy Resurrection Rolls for Easter Sunday Tradition
Resurrection rolls are a sweet Easter tradition that tells the story of Jesus’s burial and resurrection through baking. You wrap a marshmallow in cinnamon-sugar dough, and when the rolls bake, the marshmallow disappears, leaving an empty tomb.
Kids love helping make these, and they’re a meaningful way to share the Easter story while creating something delicious together.
Why the Marshmallow Disappears During Baking
The marshmallow represents Jesus’s body, and when it melts completely during baking, it creates the "empty tomb" that’s central to the Easter story. This happens because marshmallows are mostly sugar and gelatin, which liquefies at oven temperatures and gets absorbed into the dough.
Don’t worry if you see some sticky residue inside the rolls when they’re done. That’s normal and actually adds a subtle sweetness to the bread. The key is sealing the dough completely around each marshmallow so none of the melted sugar leaks out.

Equipment Needed
- 9×13-inch baking dish
- Small mixing bowl
- Pastry brush
Instructions
- Prepare oven and coating: Preheat oven to 375°F. Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. In a small bowl, mix together sugar and cinnamon until combined.
- Prepare dough triangles: Unroll crescent roll dough and separate into 8 triangles. Brush each triangle lightly with melted butter, then sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar mixture.
- Wrap marshmallows: Place one marshmallow at the wide end of each triangle. Wrap the dough around the marshmallow, pinching all seams tightly to seal completely. Make sure no marshmallow is visible.
- Arrange and season: Place wrapped rolls seam-side down in the prepared baking dish, spacing them about 1 inch apart. Brush tops with remaining melted butter and sprinkle with remaining cinnamon-sugar.
- Bake until golden: Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, until rolls are golden brown on top and sound hollow when lightly tapped. The dough should spring back when gently pressed and register 190°F on an instant-read thermometer.
